A REJUVENATING HOLIDAY IN DOWNTOWN SAN MATEO

My first visit to the SANDRA CARON EUROPEAN SPA was a wonderful holistic experience. To my knowledge, there is no other facility like this around. How often do you hear about a "Vichy Spa," a "kneipp Jet Massage," a "Swiss Shower," or a "Milk Whey Jet Bath?" This 8,000 square- foot facility provides 14 treatment rooms for body and facial treatments, an herbal bar, a relaxation lounge with ergonomically designed relaxation beds, and separate facilities for women and men, including steam rooms and saunas.
I was treated to a "Fabulous Day of Spa," the most comprehensive European spa experience Caron offers. It's an 8-hour package of unique restorative and rejuvenating treatments. It includes a steam bath with oxygen, Vichy Spa(light Swedish massage under a light warm rain), Milk whey bath (waterjet),Body polish, Seaweed wrap, Swiss shower, Foil wrap Seaweed gel mask, Aromatherapy massage, Active facial, Spa pedicure with hydrojet, Alternating bath (feet), Reflexology (feet), Parafango pack (feet) Cryotomic pack (feet), Spa Manicure, Hand modelage, and a gourmet Spa lunch.
In between treatments, I spent some time in the Relaxation Lounge on one of those ergonomically designed beds. (In conversation with a staff member, I found out that they were imported from Italy when it was discovered that a cabinet maker couldn't be found here who was able to make them to the specifications required.) In Europe, all spas have a relaxation room and it is considered very important to give the body a transition period of 15 - 30 minutes between and after treatments. During I these periods complimentary mineral waters and herbal beverages are available.
I found all of the treatments to be special in some way, but my personal favorites were; the Vichy Spa, (described above), the Milk Whey Bath (jets go from feet to neck with special jets for the abdomen, good for slimming), the Active Facial, (Sandra Caron's signature facial), and the Parafango Pack, (a deep localized heat treatment, composed of mud from hot springs and various paraffins.) The pack felt quite wonderful on my arthritic hands and feet.
All in all it was a glorious day and one I would recommend to anyone, man or woman as one way to combat the stresses of the 9O's fast-paced world.
While it felt like being in one of the famous spas of Europe I was only minutes from home. It's great to know that when I only have an hour or so to spare I can stop in for a facial or a massage or a combination of services, including a trip upstairs to the newly opened yoga studio.
Many thanks to Sandra Caron and her caring staff members. I'm looking forward to seeing them again soon.
